McCurdy’s William H. Bonney aka “Billy the Kid” is a big, kind and handsome true bay roan gelding. Billy stands a solid 16 hh and a perfect 5 years old! Billy was bred, raised, and trained here at W2 horses from start to finish. He even carries our W2 brand on his left hip! Billy was one of the last foals out of our late stud, McCurdy’s Roan Lightning, who was double registered TWHBEA + McCurdy Plantation Horse Registry. Billy’s dam was a direct daughter of Jose Jose. Billy is eligible to be registered in the McCurdy Plantation Horse Registry and Association. This is a rare opportunity to own an own son of McCurdy’s Roan lightning who was one of the main leading sires in the McCurdy Plantation Horse registry.

Billy checks all these boxes, but there is no denying his ride is absolutely unbelievable. Billy’s natural gait and lope are what the foundation TWH and McCurdy horses created. This natural movement is rare to find and has been bred out of so many gaited horses in today’s world. Billy’s lineage goes back to the great horses of the 1930s and prior, including Go Boy McCurdy, McCurdy’s Fox, Miss B Allen, Midnight Mack K, Go Boys Rocket, and Roan Allen Again. Billy is crazy smooth with only a keg shoe and has great feet to do just as well barefoot if desired.

Like all of our horses here at W2 horses, Billy has been trained professionally and correctly. From the basics to the more advanced training, he is solid and consistent. Billy is super easygoing and always wants to be a gentleman. He is gentle, respectful, and easy to handle in the saddle and on the ground. He has spent hours and hours flexing, bending, moving off your legs, and picking up his shoulders, and countless hours of trail miles. Billy has a very fancy way of going with a nice head shake. He is super smooth and easy to ride. Billy is very soft and easy with all his cues. He neck reins one-handed, side passes and lopes both leads on cue with a smooth transition into a gait. He responds to leg pressure and hand cues so well that he can be ridden with no bridle or neck rope at all! He will simply respond to your seat, hands, and legs alone. He will abruptly stop when you say woah and place your legs out in front of you, then back up with a gentle motion of your legs without ever touching the reins. He has the prettiest, smoothest rocking chair canter that you’d love to ride all day. He can be ridden in a simple O-ring snaffle with a loose rein, fast or slow, and still, be just as smooth. Billy is so soft, he can be ridden bareback and BRIDLELESS anywhere.

Billy has an extensive background on the trail and in the woods making him a pro at going through tall brush, over logs, and crossing ditches and creeks. He is used to seeing all kinds of wildlife and quail flying up in his face. Billy knows how to ground tie while you go flush birds and is INSANELY GREAT with gunfire on or off his back. Billy will side pass up to anything with the snap of your fingers to make mounting easy. He will stand like a statue every time you get on or off, and he’s okay with you getting on either side. Billy is used to being hobbled. He is good with traffic, flags, cattle, shotguns, equipment, and bullwhips. He can be ridden out alone or with large groups of horses. He is fine to lead the trail or follow along in the back. Billy is suitable for any level rider and would suit an inexperienced beginner and children with proper supervision.

Billy has a sweet, loving, laidback personality that always wants to please. He is the true definition of patient and will stand tied for hours on end. He stands without being tied for saddling and unsaddling and takes the bridle with ease. He is great for the farrier, bathing, and grooming. He loads easily and backs out of the trailer without issue. He hauls without pawing and is very quiet. He is easy to catch and will meet you at the gate every time. He will even follow you around eagerly looking for your attention. Billy gets along great with other horses and is just as quiet in the stall. Billy will be the same every time you meet him.
