About Gene Montgomery

Young Gene Montgomery spent summers on his grandparents’ farm, riding ponies and quarter horses on trails and at Saturday night horse shows in Coffeeville, Alabama. Of course, Gene grew up, left the happy summer days of his youth riding, and went to work. After several years without owning or riding, Gene started hunting out West, where he was introduced to riding and packing mules. To say he caught the fever would be an understatement.

As life goes, his grandfather and father passed on. Gene and his wife Mary Lee inherited his father’s half of the farm, naming it Glenthistle Farm.

The first mules the couple purchased were a young, potentially gaited molly named Dixie and a quarter-type molly named Daisy. The Montgomerys quickly determined they needed gaited mules to comfortably cover the flat ground around home. They soon discovered a shortage of quality gaited animals. Work mules were more commonplace in Alabama. That shortfall led Gene and Mary Lee to acquiring mares and a jack to create the perfect gaited mule stock.

Of course, great stock can only carry you so far. Training becomes paramount to good breeding. The two go hand in hand, along with the best nutrition, care, and allowing mules to develop at their own pace. Gene and Mary Lee were fortunate to start a relationship with trainer David Borntreger and his wonderful family.

David provides the understanding and knowledge mules need to let the animals he trains become the best they can be. Gene has driven countless miles hauling mules to and from David’s training facility, first in Illinois and now in Oklahoma. The product of good breeding and caring training speaks for itself in Glenthistle Farm mules.

Gene understands the rarity and qualities needed for good gaited mules since he serves on the board of directors for the American Gaited Mule Association and serves as secretary in charge of judging gaited mules for registry.
