About Ann McQueen & Teresa Strickland

Nestled in the Florida panhandle, in DeFuniak Springs, Rustic Rose Ranch is a small horse farm with a focus on educating people and horses. Started in 2017 by Ann McQueen, it is home to a small herd of Quarter Horses, Paints, and Paso Finos.

Born with an inexplicable fascination with horses, Ann’s childhood was spent reading every horse book she could get her hands on. Her dream was fulfilled when her parents let her get her first horse, a feisty Quarter cross with lots of bad habits. Though she never pursued formal lessons, she developed a bond with her quirky horse and enjoyed the camaraderie of barn friends and days of exploring the countryside, swimming in ponds, and competing in 4-H gymkhanas. “Those were the days,” Ann remembered. “I had no fear, none of us did.”

After pursuing college, a career, and family, Ann returned to the horse world in 2014 with a young Paso Fino. A few years later, she purchased her farm. “I quickly learned how little I really knew,” Ann recalled.“I thought that since I had grown up with a horse that I was experienced, but I was anything but. And, I had all these doubts and fears.I guess I knew I would no longer bounce if I hit the ground.”

Ann started reaching out to trainers, and she met Teresa in 2018 at an equine professional’s extravaganza. She was immediately struck by Teresa’s amazing charm, her happy and upbeat way of communicating and her encouragement of her students and horses. Ann also admired Teresa’s unwavering Faith, and how it laid the groundwork for her small operation. It didn’t hurt that Teresa was a fourth generation trainer with tremendous knowledge of both the hobby and show worlds in a variety of disciplines. Teresa’s Hidden Ridge Farm was the perfect place for Ann’s horses in training, and for Ann to grow her skill so she could enjoy her horses with confidence.

Teresa’s farm is located in Midland City AL, near Dothan. Her program starts with a handling/taming phase, teaching basics like patience, standing, bathing and grooming, touching, leading,  ponying, loading and more. She spends time in the round pen working on everything from directing, transitions and leads to obstacles to self carriage and flexion.  She transfers the lessons to under saddle, and then a process of introducing the horse to a variety of people, places and things begins.

“It’s about so much more than putting 90 days on a horse and sending him home,” Teresa added. “I want to make sure that a horse and rider are a good match — in skill and personality. I want them to be successful in whatever way they choose to go.”

Feel free to reach out to either Ann or Teresa with any questions.
