Meet Hondo, he’s a 15.2 hand tall Buckskin gelding that both Rides & Drives! So, he’s as versatile as he is handsome! He is 1/2 Morgan, 1/4 Friesian, 1/4 Tennessee Walking Horse. He is not gaited, though. But he has VERY smooth gaits. His canter is EASY to sit to. And his trot is very smooth, so you can easily post or sit to it.
Under saddle, Hondo is a BLAST to ride. He will go anywhere you point him with no hesitation. He is very trail savvy. And will cross any water, bridge, log, etc. He will hop up steep banks and carefully pick his way down a steep hill. He is NOT a spooky horse. He has been there; he has seen that type of attitude. He is a very fun-to-ride trail machine because you can go anywhere with him.
He is very traffic safe. He has seen snowmobiles, semis, motorcycles, etc. Traffic does NOT phase him. He is good with wildlife. In fact, we have spooked turkeys up in the trees and had them flying out above his head, and he never blinked an eye at it. He is quite used to Tramp’s (His doggy sidekick) antics, and it’s cute to watch Tramp pounce at Hondo, trying to get him to play. So, he is fine with a dog riding with him, popping in and out of the brush, and running full speed up behind him.
He gets along out in the herd. He is lower to middle on the pecking order. He stands well for the farrier, good for tacking, and good for mounting. He’s easy to catch. Loads in the trailer, good, and backs right out. And he hauls good, too. He will leave home alone, with no problems, and will separate from the other horses out on the trail. He can lead or follow.
For driving, he stands to hitch, unhitch, and get on and off the cart. He stands at the stop signs and lights. He does NOT care about any traffic. He’s been through heavier traffic than what you’ll see in the video.
He has been driven with a crupper on his harness, and he is fine to be driven with it on. However, I leave it off now because every time I go to put it on, he tucks his tail down hard and just doesn’t seem to like the feel of it under there. He has NEVER done anything bad with a crupper under his tail, but I’ve just taken to driving without one for his comfort. And he has a good wither to hold the saddle, so he doesn’t really need a crupper. For driving, I would say he’s an intermediate driver. Someone who is familiar with driving horses and knows what they are doing.
Hondo is very safe, absolutely NO buck, rear, kick, bite, etc. NO bad habits or vices. He has medium-paced gaits for the most part; sometimes he has a slow little canter, or a slow jog trot, he’ll do. If you let him sit for a month without using him, he is the same horse; otherwise, he will want to move out at a faster pace. The first couple of rides after that, he’s back to his medium to slow speed. But he is NOT a hot horse, but neither is he lazy. He is a typical Morgan who likes to move out. But he will walk if you want him to, or trot if you want him to.
Hondo comes up to date on everything: vaccines, dewormings, coggins, vet check, farrier, and he had his teeth floated recently. Just call if you want to come see him or if you have any questions.
